Reviews of The Butterfly
Review by: Mike Chinakos
on March 08, 2012 :
Reading the Butterfly is like stepping through the looking glass with Alice or landing in Oz with Dorothy... on acid.
This original tale delves deeply into the human psyche. The characters deal with emotional and physical scars by seeking escape into the Pocket Worlds. Within the Pocket Worlds they can control their own environment as wizards; but when the rules of the Pocket Worlds begin to break down, when they begin to lose control of their worlds, then the Pocket Wizards must band together to keep their personal demons at bay and save a place that has become a haven for suffering souls.
Pam Bainbridge-Cowan has crafted a fantasy tale both dark and uplifting; an amazing literary feat. Both adults and young readers will be attracted to this book, but I have to issue a slight warning that there is some material that would be suited only for mature young adult readers. Some of the emotional distress that the characters deal with is very adult.
I'm waiting anxiously for the next journey into the Pocket Worlds introduced
Review by: Karen Shaw on Dec. 05, 2011 :
Great book. By the time I finished, I felt like I had actually travelled in the pocket worlds and knew the characters residing there. The description of the people and places were amazing. Cowan brings you into the story as it unfolds and you can't help but feel part of it. Looking forward to the sequel!
Review by: Sue Owen -Paper Mustang on Sep. 03, 2011 :
It is well written, the characters are likable (when they should be) and the story is easy to follow. Its kind of like Wizard of Oz meets Cinderella. I loved reading this. The world the author creates is amazing. I would not be ashamed to admit that I may have laid down and tried to find the door. The world completely grabs the imagination and draws you in. I love the idea of different pockets that can be made as we wanted.
The characters in this book are so varied it could have easily gotten out of control but the author kept them together and added their little character quirks as she went along making them more of the plot then some big, long analysis of who that person was. I liked the vivid descriptions of each pocket and the variety.
The ending was great. Although I kind of saw it coming it was wonderful watching it all unfold and I’m very happy that when I learn how to focus that maybe Yetzirah will be waiting for me. I give this a hearty must read. It was fun and very enjoyable to travel through.

A truly delightful, magical story that appeals to young and old alike. Cowan has created a wonderful world that is so vivid you will want to go there too. Her characters are real, with real problems, hopes and fears. A modern day "Wizard of Oz" that will touch even the coldest heart. It is a definite must read!

Reviews of Something in the Dark
"This is a "who's doing it" type murder mystery thriller that keeps the reader guessing who the killer is all the way through. There are plenty of red herrings to throw you off and at one point I had 4 suspects in mind. ...The story starts off quite slow as the author sets the scene and introduces us to the characters but the pace picks up once the killings begin. A great story with good, indepth characters. I look forward to reading more books by PJ Cowan." ~Mr. Magic, Amazon Reviewer
"P.J. Cowan is master of the red herring. Several times while reading this thriller, I felt I solved the whodunit, because I followed the false trails laid down by the writer. I should have known better - clever Cowan distracted me so much that only when the author revealed the murderer did I know the truth. Cowan's descriptions are evocative - each word is a gem - her sense of place, perfect. I could not put it down - I stayed up all night reading it, because Cowan made me care deeply for the characters and I just had to know what happened to them. This is a great read for all who love great characters and adore suspense." ~Lisa Cromwell, College Professor and long-time Journalist.
